Drag Car Racing - Ever Thought of Trying It?

Drag Car Racing - Ever Thought of Trying It? [racing car loan]

Do you find yourself obsessively watching car racing on TV or driving to the local racetrack? Do you love tinkering with cars out in the garage, getting oil on your hands? Does the sound of a super-charged engine get your blood pumping?

Well, maybe you’re the kind of person who would love to get into the hobby sport of Drag Racing. Here’s some insight.

Drag car racer, Lorne Walters, worked on his drag car for over two years, making it one of the fastest cars on the strip. He even competes against cars that have a higher rated horsepower than his 1984 drag racing street car that he picked up for next-to-nothing. He collected inexpensive, used parts for it for over a year, until he finally bolted it all together and cranked the ignition.

Since then, he has put a couple of seasons of driving and fine-tuning under his belt. He explained that it is not major changes that produce big leaps in performance but many little changes over time that makes the difference between winning and losing a race.

Removing the muffler increased his engine’s horsepower. Removing over three hundred pounds of non-essentials made the car lighter. Removing the belt-driven fan and replacing it with a battery-powered fan reduced the load on the engine. Changing from street tires to tires that get sticky when you lay rubber and heat them up increased his car’s traction. All of these changes increased his car’s speed. [racing car loan]

When you’re counting your racing time in tenths of a second, every little change brings you closer to winning.

One of Lorne’s motto's to live by is, “You can’t learn it if you don’t do it.” If you want to become a better and more successful Drag Race driver, you can’t just read about it or watch it, you must do it! The more you do it, and apply what you learn from the experience, the better you become.

Before he ever thought of driving his own car though, Lorne joined a pit crew for a stock car driver, which allowed him to network with other enthusiasts and also get into the thick of it. Once he got bitten by the race car fever, getting behind the wheel became a driving obsession.

Consistency is also one of the major keys to winning. In Drag Racing, it isn’t always the fastest car that wins, but also the one who stays consistent in doing the little things right. Good race timing scores must be repeated often.

Lorne also learned quickly that when you’re on the strip, ready to go, you don’t hang around waiting to be “told” to go. Waiting for the tree of lights to reach green-for-go cost him 1.2 seconds. Which meant that his competitor, who exploded his engine’s horsepower into forward motion just prior to green, left the gate just as the tree hit green and was way out ahead of him. There is always a lag time before the car will actually burst forward.

When Lorne started out with his own car, tagging along with a successful racer who knew the circuit and all the ropes placed him car lengths beyond his competition. He also gained much of his knowledge by asking lots of questions, searching the Internet for free information, and by hands-on experience. [racing car loan]

Drag Racing is no longer a hobby to Lorne, it’s a passion – a passion that pushes him from race to race throughout the season.

Maybe this could be your passion, and like Lorne, you may get some or even your entire car sponsored by local businesses.

Not sure if you would like it? Some drivers are allowed to take passengers during certain parts of the day. Why not get to know one and go for a trial spin?

Happy super-charging!

The American Quarter Horse

The American Quarter Horse [car racing loan]

The American Quarter horse is the most popular horse in America today. With over 3 million registered horses, their use continues to increase even today. The Quarter horse has not been around as long as the Arabian horse but it is a much more popular horse in terms of use and ownership in America.

The Quarter horse was named after its original use for racing quarter mile lengths. The horses were brought over from Europe by some of the original colonists along with their love of racing.

The colonists would race these horses down quarter mile tracks, usually on roads or paths. In order to breed a powerful racing horse they combined the best qualities of several different breeds. Arabian or Turkish stallions were bred to English mares to produce a horse that was well muscled and close to the ground.

Cowboys would eventually start using the Quarter horse to help them herd cattle. Quarter horses proved to be a very agile horse; they could literally turn on a dime. This type of agility proved very useful for the cowboys in rounding up cattle, these horses can turn and accelerate rapidly. [car racing loan]

Today, Quarter horses are used in all sorts of horse competitions. They make up 50 percent of all registered horses in the United States. One of the competitions they are used for is called barrel racing. Barrel racing is where the horse must run an obstacle course changing directions quickly to get through the course in the least amount of time. Naturally, this event involving quick changes of directions is a perfect event for the Quarter horse.

The American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) is the main Quarter horse association in America. The AQHA is also the largest horse association in America boasting over 300,000 members!

A membership to the AQHA cost $35 a year, and gives you access to the many services the AQHA offers. Their website, www.aqha.com, gives a large amount of information and offers a breed registry. Through their website you can search pedigrees back through four generations. Also listed are all show dates and show results.

No matter if you are an exhibitor, a racer, or a cowboy, the AQHA tries to provide individualized service for every segment of the Quarter horse association. [car racing loan]

The quarter horse has proven to be one of the fastest and most agile horses alive today. If you want a horse that can turn on a dime and accelerate quickly the American Quarter horse is for you.

Slot Car Racing Knows No Age Limits

Slot Car Racing Knows No Age Limits [car racing loan]

Slot car racing is a type of racing hobby that is not seen as much these days. Kids want electronic gadgets such as phones and MP3 players. They want computers and high-speed Internet connections. Whatever happened to the simple toys? Slot car racing is making a comeback, and it doesn't take lots of cash or skill to have enormous amounts of fun.

The hobby of slot car racing is so named because each racing car has a small pin that projects beneath it. This pin sits in a slot that is continuous around the whole track. Most tracks have two slots so two cars can race.

The slot is electrified so that the tiny electric motor in the slot car can receive power around the whole track. Racers use pistol shaped hand held controllers to change the speed of their cars. The goal is to be the first to complete the required number of laps without the car leaving the track.

Even though the car seems to be anchored into its slot, it is possible for cars to deslot or leave the track especially around the curves. It takes much skill to master the curves in slot car racing.

Slot car racing is a hobby in which two or more racers can each control a scale model racing car on a scale model track. Common scales include 1 to 24, 1 to 32, and HO scale. Those numbers on the 1 to 24 scale mean that 24 inches on the full sized racing car are represented by 1 inch on the scale model. For instance, a real racing car that is 16 feet (192 inches) long would be only 8 inches long at 1 to 24 scale. [car racing loan]

Beginner's slot car racing kits have everything needed to begin slot car racing within minutes. The track comes in short plastic sections that snap together so that the slots line up appropriately. Common track configurations are oval and figure eight. In the oval track, two sharp curved sections are joined by two long straight sections. Cars essentially race around an elongated circle.

In the figure eight track, the two long straight sections of the oval track are crossed in the middle, creating the appearance of the number eight. The figure eight is an exciting configuration because it has the potential for the cars to actually collide! Collisions are not possible on the oval track.

Slot car racing is gaining in popularity. Some specialty party businesses are offering slot car birthday parties for children. Up to 16 (or maybe more) children can race on a super large slot car track at the same time! These businesses also cater to adults, providing slot car parties to businesses and corporations. [car racing loan]

Anyone can learn to slot car race simply by picking up the controller. It is a time-honored hobby that is making its way back into the hearts of those who first loved it decades ago.
